Our building is aging. It has a date of 1878 on the front. The basement was dug out later but it's still old.

Some of its parts wore out this week. There was a blockage that had to be cleared. A cracked pipe that had to be replaced, a couple of rusty toilet flanges that broke down, a sink sprung a leak. There is asbestos tiles in the basement that came up with all the water under them and now abatement will be necessary to make it safe.  There was drywall affected by the water that will need to be cut out and a wood vanity in one of the restrooms that is water logged and will also need to be replaced.

It's been a busy week. We're grateful for Jim Pyle and David Appler who stepped in on Sunday to suck up the water. We had to do that a few more times before the problem was fixed.  Grateful for our new custodian, Juan, who cheerfully faced removing soaked carpet on his second day. Grateful for plumbers, ServPro and city workers who investigated with cameras in pipes to solve the various mysteries that is our water-logged basement.

While the basement is being repaired, the 12-step groups will move upstairs to the vestry... so we could use a few "hosts" on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings for the next few weeks to help with hospitality and securing the building. And we'll need to share our space. We can do it!

In the process of investigating the issues in the basement, we've discovered some other areas that need repair.  Do not be surprised if you see a few signs around the building asking you to use another restroom.  We appreciate your patience and understanding during this time.  The good news is, we can use most restrooms again!

The water is back on. The water is a bit brown from the sediment of being off but this too shall pass. We're on the road, the wet, bumpy road to recovery.

Blessings,
Rev Kelly

The wisdom of Ecclesiastes says:

For everything there is a season and a time for every matter under heaven.

We know that is the truth in many ways in our lives, in the changing of the seasons, in the transient nature of work and home.

We heard from Garrett (the young man who sat on the back right for the last month) that he has moved to Boston, and while it is a good opportunity for him, he said he was sad that it moved him "away from MSUMC" -- a church whose welcome he so appreciated. He thanked us for our gracious hospitality, the personal note of welcome, and our good work.

Also, Mercedes Cernuda sent a note celebrating the many wonderful seasons she has had at MSUMC, in the choir, in classes, at fellowship, etc. She is grateful for the role this church has in her life and she's seeking to explore her Catholic heritage with her family.

Our role, as their church for a season, is to love them even from a distance and wish them well. And (as Tom Bodett famously ad-libbed for an ad) to leave the light on for them. Both plan to return when possible and know that MSUMC will be a continuing part of their story. The door is open and we welcome their journey and their presence whenever possible.

We are committed to folks finding the right place for them at the right time for wherever they are on the journey. And that changes throughout a life. We recognize those seasons and do not begrudge folks those changes. Let us honor our role in people's lives for whatever season we are given.

Blessings,
Rev Kelly

Bean Supper Success!

Thanks to everyone who helped with and attended the Friends and Family Bean Supper, the event was a success! The supper let us try out the assisted buffet format and other modifications on a small scale. Now, after making a few minor changes, we're looking forward to welcoming the public once again on October 7.

Although the final sales total has not been tallied, we served 36 people and took in over $400 dollars at the supper, then had a vigorous sale of leftovers on Sunday morning.

Thank you again and see you in October!

Our awesome and extremely talented Music Director, Mike, is getting married at the end of September.  We had to arm wrestle him to get this information, but we were finally able to.  We are hoping, if you feel called to do so, to give to their wedding registry, the link is below.  They are collecting to support their future and the registry link below is for monetary donations.
