Next Spring, United Methodists will be gathered in Charlotte, NC working for changes to our United Methodist Book of Discipline (BoD) - our denominational polity. John Wesley, founder of the Methodist Church, believed that we, as humans, are "going on to perfection." He considered it a life-long, continual process for Christians, and believed that "by God's grace" we all will be made perfect in love. Like us, the United Methodist BoD is also not yet perfect, but continually moving onward to perfection. We're grateful for a structure and process that allows for improvement, and I've been honored to work beside so many incredible, faithful people during the last six General Conferences to do all we can to contribute to our beloved UMC's becoming her best self. #OnwardToPerfection
To that end, I'm in Charlotte this weekend at the Reconciling Convocation. This year's theme, Onward toward Perfection, highlights the Reconciling Movement's dedication to a more inclusive future for our Church, local congregations, and communities.
Convocation is an invitation for us to imagine what the Church could be – to move from frustration or disappointment to connection and hope. It is where our divinely-inspired imaginations can lead us to new possibilities for inclusive and just communities. And those of us going to GC get to organize and dream how we might put those imaginations on display at GC. My work is in coalition with 14 other organizations ranging from Creation Care, to Middle East peace to Disabled Ministers and Black Methodists for Church Renewal.
Our work begins today. Follow the church on Instagram for updates.
Blessings,
Rev Kelly
