 A Word from the Pastor

Last spring the Church Council approved the organizing of a Reconciling Congregations Committee here in the church in order to explore what it would mean for us to officially become a "reconciling" congregation.  Led by Paul Pederzani, the committee has met regularly to learn more about the reconciling church movement in the United Methodist Church and to learn more about the challenges that face members of the LGBTQ community as members of the United Methodist Church.  I approached the committee with the invitation to plan this year's Laity Sunday worship services which will take place on Sunday at 8:15am and 10:30am.  These services will provide an opportunity for all of us to hear the stories of our LGBTQ members as well as some of their family members.  It is important for us to move from seeing "homosexuality" as an issue that the church must face to seeing the faces of those who are hurt by the discriminatory practices that our denomination has in place.  Ultimately, we are talking about people and the people we are talking about are our fellow church members, our families, our daughters and sons, and grandchildren, in other words, they are us!

It is my hope and prayer that you will make it a point to be in attendance this coming Sunday in order to hear the stories that are shared and consider what role you might be led to take on as we consider becoming a reconciling congregation.  Please see below the information about the special Church Conference that will be held on Sunday, November 17th at which time the members of the Main Street UMC will have opportunity to cast their vote.  In the meantime, I invite you to keep our LGBTQ members and their families in your prayers along with the entire congregation.  Pray that we will indeed be open to the leading of God's Spirit in this time of decision and commitment.

                                                                                                                                                Prayerfully,

                                                                                                                                                Pastor Rich

SPECIAL SESSION OF CHURCH CONFERENCE CALLED

At the request of the Church Council our District Superintendent, Rev. Taesung Kang, has approved the calling of a special session of Church Conference to be held on Sunday, November 17th at noon.  The sole purpose of this special session is to consider the motion to become a reconciling congregation.  The motion will be made available through all of the usual channels (Mainstreeter; weekly blast; Sunday announcements) following the Church Council meeting on Monday, October 28th at which time it will be presented to the Council.  Although anyone is welcome to attend the Special Session and to have voice, only those who are members of the Main Street UMC will be able to vote per the Discipline of the United Methodist Church.  Should you have any questions please speak to Pastor Rich, Paul Pederzani or any member of the Reconciling Congregations Committee.

CONSECRATION SUNDAY REMINDER

Last Sunday we celebrated Consecration Sunday and presented our pledges of support to God for the year 2020. As of last Monday 56 pledges had been received in support of the General Fund in the amount of $176,273 and another 19 pledges were received towards the Heart of Nashua Campaign to pay down our debt in the amount of $24,760.  If you have not as yet submitted your pledge card please do so as soon as possible by mailing it to the church office to the attention of Bill Francis, our Financial Secretary or by including it in the offering plate any Sunday.  Your commitment and support are greatly appreciated.

OPPORTUNITY OF THE WEEK

Each week we will try to highlight a particular opportunity for you to serve in and through the Main Street UMC.

Although it is still a week away I wanted to highlight the need for volunteers to assist with the Ham and Bean Supper on Saturday, November 2nd.  The sign up sheet will be out on Sunday for you to indicate when you can assist (Friday for preparations; Saturday morning for set up; and Saturday afternoon for serving or clean up).  Your help is greatly appreciated.

OPERA ON MAIN STREET RETURNS

The next operatic concert to be hosted by the church will take place on Saturday, October 26th at 7:00pm in the sanctuary.  "The Magic of Mozart" will consist of arias and duets from Mozart's most famous operas.  The cost is $12.00 per person and $10.00 for senior citizens and students.  Tickets are sold at the door only.  You are welcome to join the F Troop members at 5:30pm for a potluck in the vestry prior to going to the concert.

UP-C0MING DISTRICT RESOURCE DAY

District Resource Days, no matter which district is sponsoring them, are open to anyone.  The District Resource Day for the Metro Boston District will be of interest to many of our Vestry Adult Sunday School class members since it will feature Diana Butler Bass.  The event will take place on Saturday, November 16th from 9:30am-2:30pm and it will be held at the Weston United Methodist Church, 377 North Ave., Weston, MA 02493. You do need to register and there is a $10.00 cost to cover the lunch that will be served.  Please go to the following link to register or speak to Pastor Rich and he will register you-

https://neumc-reg.brtapp.com/MBHandCMADistrictResourceDaywithDianaButlerBass  If you are interested in attending and desiring to car pool please speak to Pastor Rich.  Here is what the Boston Metro District Website has to say about Dr. Bass:  Dr. Butler Bass has authored many influential and poignant books on how to seek an authentic renewal of the practice of Christian faith and community.  No matter what the future of UMC will look like, such a future has to come as the birth of a new spiritual awakening and practice as a Jesus movement. Time with Dr. Butler Bass will create an opening where we can prayerfully and practically engage in how we can usher in such future of God in our midst.  Clergy and church leaders are encouraged to attend.  Don't miss this great opportunity!

Add yourself if you want to walk! If you signed up to sponsor our CROP walk team, give your check to Nonny by October 27 since it must be turned in that day. If it's too late to do that, please support us online.  If you have already signed up to walk or have sponsored a walker or our CROP Hunger Walk team from Main Street, thank you! Information is available after church in the vestry, and so are CROP Hunger Walk shirts!

Why Become Reconciling?

As you may realize by now, here at Main Street we're considering a Reconciling congregation. Part of that, as you may have read last week, involves being more intentional with our welcome to the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning (LGBTQ) community.

"But wait," you might be saying, "don't we already welcome LGBTQ people? Why do we need to do anything different?" The short answer is that we need to do this because of the General Conference vote earlier this year. It singled out the LGBTQ community as ineligible for ministry in the Book of Discipline while not singling out any other group as such.

While this restriction doesn't apply to LGBTQ laypersons, it nevertheless instills a feeling in them that they're a second class in the church. We must then go out of our way to make them feel welcome since, as Paul writes in his letter to the Galatians, we are all one in Christ. We can't just wait for them to engage with us; if we want them to know that we welcome them, we need to let them know that before they even walk in the door.

Becoming Reconciling is one way for us to do that. The Reconciling Ministries Network provides resources for engaging with the LGBTQ community. Joining their network of LGBTQ-friendly congregations sends a signal that we truly believe Paul's words from Galatians.

Check back here next week for more information about becoming Reconciling leading up to the vote on November 17th

 A Word from the Pastor

Greetings Mainstreeters!

The weekend ahead promises to be a very full weekend with something for everyone and a lot for some of us!  It all begins tomorrow with the memorial service at 2:00pm for Barry Quimby.  Barry is the son of Carl Quimby and he was known throughout his life as an advocate for the homeless and mentally ill.  Many who knew him well will be sharing their stories and celebrating his life.  Some of his musical friends will also share with us in song some of Barry's favorite music.

Our youth and their families will be gathering tomorrow evening at 6:00pm at the home of Erica and Clem Borrotto and their son, Austin, for the first of the fall youth potluck dinners.  All youth and family members in grades 7-12 are invited to attend.

As you can see from the information below Sunday is going to be a very full day.  Our District Superintendent, Taesung Kang, will be with us all morning and into the afternoon.  He will meet with the members of the Staff Parish Relations Committee at 9:00am in the vestry meeting room.  At about noon we will begin our annual Church Conference which will be held in the sanctuary.  Grab a cup of coffee after the 10:30am service and meet us back upstairs so that we can begin promptly at noon.

The World Café focusing on issues pertaining to affordable housing will take place from 4:00-5:30pm at Temple Beth Abraham.  This will be an informative opportunity to learn about the housing issues in our community from both faith leaders and city leaders.

The day will conclude for the members of the newly restructured Christian Education Committee with a meeting at 6:00pm in the Ladies' Parlor.

I hope that you will join us for some or all of these exciting and worthwhile church activities.  Isn't it great to be an active and vital congregation!

Blessings on your weekend,

Pastor Rich

WORSHIP AHEAD

10/20    The Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost

                Consecration Sunday

Fall Stewardship Campaign Continues: Stewardship speakers- Bill Moseley at 8:15am and Dave Appler at 10:30am

Bell Choir playing

Choir singing

Scripture: Second Timothy 3:14-4:5; Luke 18:1-8

Theme: Stewardship and Prayer- As stewards we are called to manage all of the resources that God puts at our disposal, but we do so with a particular purpose in mind- to transform the world so that the will of God is done on earth even as it is done in heaven.  Sometimes it seems as though we are not making much progress on this front and we are tempted to give up.  This is when it becomes all the more important for us to pray unceasingly and with perseverance.

CONSECRATION SUNDAY REMINDER

By now you should have received an invitation from Elizabeth Wilds, our Stewardship chairperson, inviting you to fill out your pledge of support for the mission and ministry of the Main Street United Methodist Church for the year 2020.  Please plan to be with us, pledge card in hand, on Sunday, October 20th.  On this day we will consecrate all pledges of support to God.  All pledges, no matter their size, are significant.  We thank you in advance for your commitment to God and to the Main Street UMC.  If you are unable to be present in worship on October 20th   please be sure to mail in your pledge card in advance.  If you, for some reason, did not receive Elizabeth's letter and the pledge card please call the church office and one will be mailed to you. The church office number is 882-3361.

OPPORTUNITY OF THE WEEK

Each week we will try to highlight a particular opportunity for you to serve in and through the Main Street UMC.

At the most recent Church Council meeting the decision was made to begin to use our regular coffee cups during our fellowship time on Sunday morning instead of Styrofoam cups.  This will require that they be washed afterwards using our commercial dishwasher.  Needless to say, we are in need of a number of people who would be willing to learn to use the dishwasher.  If interested please speak to Pastor Rich or Jerry Harrow.  Thank you for your assistance in helping to remove hundreds or thousands of Styrofoam cups from our landfill during the years to come!

ANNUAL CHURCH CONFERENCE THIS SUNDAY

Our annual Church/Charge Conference date has been set for Sunday, October 20th following the 10:30am worship service. Our new District Superintendent, Rev. Taesung Kang will meet with the Staff Parish Relations Committee at 9:00am. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to come together as a church community to celebrate our ministries and prepare for the future.  All are encouraged to attend.

WORLD CAFÉ SUNDAY AFTERNOON

A follow up gathering to have further discussion about affordable housing will take place today from 4-5:30pm at Temple Beth Abraham, 4 Raymond Street in Nashua.  There will be three groups that people will spend 20 minutes each with:

Ø  Affecting change: Context & Tools (hosted by Sarah Marchant, Sarah Jane Knoy, and Bob Keating)

Ø  Impact: Personal stories (hosted by Tonia Kinsley, a friend of Tonia's, and Sarah Wrightsman as a story-telling coach)

Ø  Moving forward: Goals and questions (facilitated by Rabbi Jon, Michael Reinke, and Sarah Jacobs (a professor of Ethics at St. Anselm)

All are invited to be a part of this important conversation.

THIRD SUNDAY FOOD PANTRY

If you want to help with our Third Sunday Food Pantry, meet us at the Nashua Soup Kitchen at 1:30 on October 20.  The food pantry is open from 2 to 4, and if you know folks who could use food, please invite them to come on Sunday afternoon.

WHAT RECONCILING IS AND IS NOT

By now you've probably heard that MSUMC is looking at becoming a Reconciling congregation, but you may not be familiar with the term and unsure of what becoming Reconciling actually means. Here's a brief overview of what it would entail, courtesy of the Reconciling Congregation committee:

Reconciling is:

  • Intentionally, publicly, and visibly welcoming the LGBTQ community inside and outside our doors
  • Living out our statement that "we welcome all who seek to love God and neighbor"
  • Supporting LGBTQ individuals in our congregation and community

 Reconciling is not:

  • Excluding straight individuals and those in opposite-sex marriages or relationships
  • Excluding those who believe marriage should be between a man and a woman
  • Performing same-sex weddings at the church
  • Putting our standing in the New England Conference at risk
  • Adding a new financial burden

Watch this space for more information about becoming Reconciling in the coming weeks!

 A Word from the Pastor

"You will be enriched in every way for your great generosity, which will produce thanksgiving to God through us; for the rendering of this ministry not only supplies the needs of the saints but also overflows with many thanksgivings to God." Second Corinthians 9:11-13

What is the relationship between stewardship and gratitude? For the apostle Paul the answer is clear.  Generosity in whatever form- generosity of spirit, generosity of resources, generosity with one's time and talents- produces expressions of gratitude to God on the part, not only of those who are the recipients of this generosity, but also of those who witness it.  I know that this is true because I am often led to give thanks to God when I witness the incredible generosity of the members and friends of the Main Street UMC.  There isn't a day that goes by that I don't witness first hand people being generous with their time, their skills, their resources, and their compassion and caring.  I am likewise, almost daily, moved to give thanks to God for this incredible generosity.

I invite you to look around you, both while here at church and wherever else you may find yourself, and be alert to the many expressions of generosity that you see and likewise offer up prayers of thanksgiving to God.  May our gratitude bear witness to our own sense of the stewardship of life as we acknowledge the gifts of God that come to us in so many different ways and through so many different people.  Give thanks for all these gifts and for all these givers as well.

                                                                                                                                Gratefully,

Pastor Rich

WORSHIP AHEAD

10/13    The Eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost

Fall Stewardship Campaign Continues: Stewardship speaker- Joe Dechene (both services)

Choir singing

Scripture: Second Timothy 2:8-15; Luke 17:11-18

Theme: Stewardship and Gratitude- When we recognize that all that we are and all that we have is a gift of God we cannot help but be thankful.  The Samaritan leper in Luke's story knew this all to well and had to return to give thanks to God for his healing.  Does our gratitude reflect our stewardship as well?

CRAFT WORKSHOP

Saturday, October 12, 9:00 am to 2:00 pm

All are invited to join us for a workshop to make items for the Yuletide Fair which is coming up November 9 in the Vestry. Materials will be supplied but bring your favorite scissors, glue gun and sticks or thick tacky glue. There will be a variety of materials to work with to make fall or Christmas arrangements and wreaths. We may add the Santa's, elves and forest critters we made at other workshops to cute little scenes. Let your imagination run wild. If you have your own projects you are working on and would enjoy the company, bring them along. Plan to bring your lunch and stay all day or drop in as your schedule allows. Contact Pam Breniser with any questions.

ANNUAL BLESSING OF THE CREATURES

Sunday at 3pm, rain or shine!

Typically this event is held in the Autumn around the birthdate of St. Francis of Assisi which is in October. There will be a Creature Reiki Practitioner who is delighted to share reiki love with your creature family members. If your creature companion cannot attend in "person" then you could bring a photo or their ashes, or something that was special to them: a toy, blanket, pillow… Posthumous blessings grace your creature and all of the Divine Realm. If your creature is wild, consider bringing a feather, or a piece of fur, a leaf from a tree under which they pass, a stone from one of their favorite resting places, a flower which has shared its nectar.

The Blessing of the Creatures can feature music, festivities, and the Procession of the Blessing, with Pastor Rich offering a blessing prayer with each creature. The event will be held on the plaza in front of the church, Sunday October 13, 3pm. For the safety and comfort of all, please note that living creatures must be on a leash or in a carrier.

Please join in the joy of encouraging and supporting ALL God's creatures!

NEW MEMBER CLASSES TO BE OFFERED

Are you interested in becoming a member of the Main Street United Methodist Church? Interested in knowing more about the United Methodist Church itself? Interested in a refresher course on faith and church? If so, please plan to attend the series of two classes that will be offered on Sunday, October 13th and Sunday, October 20th.  The classes will take place from 9am – 10am in Pastor Rich's office and will be led by Pastor Rich with assistance from our lay leaders and other active church members. Those who choose to join the church will be received as new members on Sunday, October 20th during the 10:30am worship service.  Please sign up in advance using the sheet that is located on the bulletin board under the clock in the vestry.

 A Word from the Pastor

"For, as I can testify, they voluntarily gave according to their means, and even beyond their means, begging us earnestly for the privilege of sharing in this ministry to the saints- and this, not merely as we expected; they gave themselves first to the Lord and, by the will of God, to us." Second Corinthians 8:3-5

When it comes to Christian stewardship to whom or to what do you give? When you write out your check or give electronically or put your cash in the offering plate, to whom are you giving your contribution?  My hope is that each of us takes to heart the words of the apostle Paul which he spoke to the Christians in Corinth.  In this passage Paul is using the example of the Christians in Macedonia to inspire and motivate the Corinthians in their own giving.  The Macedonian Christians gave both according to their means and even above their means because they first gave themselves to God and with the understanding that they were giving to God first and foremost.

Although the Main Street UMC has numerous financial obligations and therefore creates a budget to insure that these commitments are met, when it comes to our giving through the church we need to give ourselves first and then, our gifts to God rather than to the church budget.  We too need to follow the example of the Macedonian Christians.  When we are conscious of the decision to give first to God and only secondarily to the needs of the church our focus is in the right place- that of acknowledging that all that we have and all that we are is God's gift to us.

As you prayerfully consider filling out a pledge card for the year 2020 I would invite you to spend some time reflecting on God's many blessings in your life and determine that you will give accordingly- both of yourself and your time and talents, and of your financial resources.  May your decision be grounded in prayer, motivated by faith, and an expression of love to God and to the world.  Please come prepared to make your commitment at our Consecration Sunday worship services on Sunday, October 20th.

                                                                                                                                                                Stewards Together,
