Our building is aging. It has a date of 1878 on the front. The basement was dug out later but it's still old.
Some of its parts wore out this week. There was a blockage that had to be cleared. A cracked pipe that had to be replaced, a couple of rusty toilet flanges that broke down, a sink sprung a leak. There is asbestos tiles in the basement that came up with all the water under them and now abatement will be necessary to make it safe. There was drywall affected by the water that will need to be cut out and a wood vanity in one of the restrooms that is water logged and will also need to be replaced.
It's been a busy week. We're grateful for Jim Pyle and David Appler who stepped in on Sunday to suck up the water. We had to do that a few more times before the problem was fixed. Grateful for our new custodian, Juan, who cheerfully faced removing soaked carpet on his second day. Grateful for plumbers, ServPro and city workers who investigated with cameras in pipes to solve the various mysteries that is our water-logged basement.
While the basement is being repaired, the 12-step groups will move upstairs to the vestry... so we could use a few "hosts" on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings for the next few weeks to help with hospitality and securing the building. And we'll need to share our space. We can do it!
In the process of investigating the issues in the basement, we've discovered some other areas that need repair. Do not be surprised if you see a few signs around the building asking you to use another restroom. We appreciate your patience and understanding during this time. The good news is, we can use most restrooms again!
The water is back on. The water is a bit brown from the sediment of being off but this too shall pass. We're on the road, the wet, bumpy road to recovery.
Blessings,
Rev Kelly
