The moral challenges and political hurdles we face in today's America have been simmering throughout our history as a nation. But our problems have come to a boil.
Carter Heyward (church historian and author of "The Seven Deadly Sins of Christian Nationalism" xiv) writes:
"Our problems threaten to destroy the constitutional foundations of our
democratic republic and turn us into an authoritarian nation that most Americans
and Christians would come to despise, regardless of how conservative,
moderate, or progressive we may be in our politics or our faith."
For those who have been watching the Christian nationalist agenda, who have watched the documentary "Bad Faith" (there's a free opportunity to see it online TONIGHT), this week's actions by the administration weren't surprising – just disturbing.
Cameron Trimble writes:
"Over the weekend, Donald Trump posted an AI-generated image of himself
dressed as the Pope. The White House then reposted it, doubling down on
the statement. In any previous era, this would have been unthinkable—a
political leader publicly depicting himself in papal vestments, co-opting
religious symbolism for personal aggrandizement. In our current context,
where reality is blurred by digital manipulation, and ego is often mistaken
for leadership, it becomes not just a strange moment, but a revealing one.
'This image—engineered and shared by the man who holds the highest
office in the US—tells us something important. It shows us what he wants
to be: the single, unquestioned authority, not only the most powerful political
leader on earth, but a spiritual one, cloaked in divine right.
Lots of people have said not to pay attention to the president's incendiary comments meant to shock and distract. Pay attention to the policies, the actions. Here, we have a case that reveals both.
This is a call to action for American Christians to get involved, to do whatever we can, each and all of us because Christianity has played a foundational role in American history. We must ensure our role is for the good and we address the distorted American dream of White Nationalism. Together, we can make "justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream." (Amos 5:24)
